Raptors 101
Friday, September 17
Illinois Raptor Center
On a “No School” holiday, bring your family on this
raptor excursion. During our trip we will learn about this
species and the natural world around them. The Raptors
101 presentation will provide information on how to
identify the raptors you see while driving along the highway,
hiking in the woods, or cutting the grass in the backyard.
We will get up close to the birds and be introduced to
four different families of raptors — an owl, a hawk, a
falcon and an “other”. The “other” is a bird that everyone
thinks is a raptor but truly isn’t. After the presentation we
will take a walking tour of the Center or you may relax on
the outside deck. A lunch stop will be made following
the tour.
• Cost: $10 per person for the presentation
• Reservation Deadline: September 10
• Tour Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
• Group can meet at Raptor Center,
5695 West Hill Road,

Adams Wildlife Sanctuary
Headquartered at the Illinois Audubon Society, the oldest
conservation organization in the state of Illinois, Adams
Wildlife Sanctuary is welcoming us to learn about their
organization, ongoing projects, and programs benefiting
Springfield’s future. Our journey will include the Margery
Adams Bird Banding Station, an on-site banding facility.
Here retired ornithologist Vern Kleen will demonstrate
and explain bird banding as we watch him band, record,
and release songbirds migrating through the woodlands
that morning. Afterwards, take a walk along the trails and
do some “birding” or sit on the deck and enjoy the
peaceful sounds of the birds at the feeders. Illinois
Audubon Society staff and volunteers will be on hand to
help with bird identification or to answer questions.

office, and experience the history of rural health care.
Next we will stop at the Southern Illinois School of
Medicine Clinical Skills Laboratory. This modern, state of
the art training facility houses dozens of interactive
models and simulators used for training and self-study by
the medical students. We will learn about standardized
